NMFS to Give Upper Deschutes Steelhead "Experimental" Designation

With fish passage facilities installed at Round Butte Dam on the Deschutes ESA listed salmon and steelhead are spawning in the tributaries of the Upper Deschutes for the first time since the 1960s. With listed fish spawning in local rivers farmers and other water users in the area are concerned about the impact the reintroduction may have on their operations. Now NMFS is proposing designating Upper Deschutes as an "experimental" population giving local irrigation districts and landowners 12 years to bring their operations into ESA compliance.
