Fraser Gravel Mining Canceled for 2011

Conservationists have long been opposed to a proposal to mine gravel from the Lower Fraser. DFO had argued that the gravel mining was intended to reduce the risk of flooding, however their justification for the decision not to go ahead with the project this year was because the price of gravel is currently too low to justify the expense. The Lower Fraser's "gravel reach" is home to the single largest salmon run in the world every two years when odd year pink salmon return and spawn. More information in the Common Sense Canadian:
